MILLER,HARVEY I., KEUKY.YUM,AND BEATRICE C.DURHAM. Myocardial free fatty acid in unanesthetized dogs at rest and during exercise. Am. J. Physiol. 220(3) : 589-596. 197 1 .-Myocardial free fatty acid (FFA) metabolism was studied in unanesthetized dogs at various plasma FFA concentrations. Exercise and norepinephrine (NE) infusion were used to raise the FFA level while glucose infusion was used to lower it. Correlation between FFA level and myocardial uptake was confirmed, and correlation between myocardial FFA removal and oxidation was shown at rest and during exercise. Isotopic palmitic acid was used to determine oxidation in heart muscle. There was no difference between arterial and coronary sinus FFA specific activity. Norepinephrine, while increasing FFA level greatly, did not increase myocardial oxidation as much. Plasma FFA accounted for 35% of the oxygen consumption of the heart during rest, about 750/, during exercise or NE infusion, and about 26% during glucose infusion. Lactic acid was taken up by the heart in the control and was changed to an output during NE infusion in some cases, decreased during glucose infusion, and was unaffected by exercise. Myocardial arteriovenous triglyceride differences were also very small. The myocardium oxidized virtually 100% of the FFA extracted from the plasma.

Effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids on the heart rate and the heart rate variability responses to myocardial ischemia or submaximal exercise.

The consumption of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) has been reported to decrease resting heart rate (HR) and increase heart rate variability (HRV). However, the effects of n-3 PUFAs on these variables in response to a physiological stress (e.g., exercise or acute myocardial ischemia), particularly in postmyocardial infarction (MI) patients, are unknown. Therefore, HR and HRV (hi...

Effect of Dietary Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids on Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability in Animals Susceptible or Resistant to Ventricular Fibrillation

The consumption of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) has been reported to reduce cardiac mortality following myocardial infarction as well as to decrease resting heart rate (HR) and increase HR variability (HRV). However, it has not been established whether n-3 PUFAs exhibit the same actions on HR and HRV in individuals known to be either susceptible or resistant to ventricular fi...

Regional myocardial free fatty acid extraction in normal and ischemic myocardium.

The rate constant for free fatty acid influx (k1) was studied in normal and ischemic myocardium. In 15 normal subjects and 30 patients with coronary artery disease, 201Tl and 15-(p-123I-iodophenyl)-pentadecanoic acid (IPPA) were administered during exercise under fasting conditions and at rest. In 10 patients, the study was repeated after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty; in three...

Gender differences in fat oxidation and sympathetic nervous system activity at rest and during submaximal exercise in older individuals.

1. Gender differences in fat oxidation at rest and during exercise may contribute to higher body fat in women. We examined gender differences in fat oxidation at rest and during submaximal exercise and their relationship to sympathetic nervous system activity, free fatty acid availability, body composition and aerobic capacity in older volunteers. 2. We measured free fatty acid kinetics using [...

Dogs with Acute Coronary Stenosis

Relationships between regional myocardial perfusion and transmural function, both during treadmill exercise and at rest, were examined in conscious dogs with varying degrees of coronary stenosis produced by a hydraulic occluder. In 13 dogs we measured myocardial blood flow with microspheres (10-12 /tm in diameter) and regional systolic wall thickening (%). During exercise with coronary stenosis...
